BJP hits out at Sonia for remarks over 'enemies'
The BJP on Monday hit out at Congress president Sonia Gandhi for describing those opposing the Indo-US nuclear deal as enemies of progress and development.
Taking exception to the UPA chairperson’s comments, the BJP said Ms Gandhi, instead of asking her government to address the concerns raised by a majority of Parliament, was resorting to nasty name calling. “The Congress has the habit of calling names to those who oppose their policies,” the BJP spokesperson said.
Responding to the charges levelled by Ms Gandhi against it, the BJP said it was not looking for a “good character certificate” from the Congress. “Ms Gandhi has no right to talk about development as her government has halted several development initiatives launched by the previous NDA government... It is the Congress which is against development.”
The BJP said contrary to what Ms Gandhi thinks, the country is opposed to a deal that will make it subservient to the US. “The BJP is ready for early polls as it will provide an opportunity for the people to give a fitting reply to the anti-people regime of the UPA,” the spokesperson said.
Asserting that the BJP is for “good relations with the US, but on equal footing”, the party spokesperson said, “This (UPA) government has forgotten Gandhi, who fought against subservience to foreign rule. The nuclear deal will lead to strategic surrender and strategic subservience to a foreign power, that is the US foreign policy.” The BJP holds the Congress, which has ruled the country for around 50 years, responsible for the “power crisis”, he added.
The BJP also accused the UPA government of putting the brakes on the indigenous fast breeder reactor programme and claimed that it was the NDA government which had given monetary and policy support to the programme.
“This deal is against national interest. If the deal is about energy security, then the government must reveal the cost involved. Generating 35,000 MW of power over a period of 30 years at an investment of Rs 2 lakh crore is not at all in the interest of the country,” the spokesperson said.
