Wipro to hire 1,000 more at Kolkata unit
The string of multi-year jumbo contracts landed by Wipro Technologies is about to shore up hirings at its Kolkata software unit.
KOLKATA: The string of multi-year jumbo contracts landed by Wipro Technologies is about to shore up hirings at its Kolkata software unit. In recent months, it has landed global contracts aggregating $450m and most of the projects will be executed by its Kolkata operations.
Accordingly, company officials claim recruitment levels at Wipro’s city operations have outstripped original projections when the office was set up some years ago. In the immediate term, Wipro Technologies plans to hire an additional 1,000 IT professionals in the city by ’08-09.
This will ramp up the company’s city headcount to 6,000. At present, the company has 3,100 staffers, of whom one-third are in the software and technical help desk operations, while a majority do a host of BPO -related work.
“The present 3,100-strong staff is well over the original 2,000 employee projection at this point,” said Sudip Banerjee, president-(enterprise solutions) at Wipro Technologies told ET.
“Total headcount at Kolkata is likely to touch 6,000 by ’08, well over the estimated 5,000 by fiscal ’08-09,” he said. The latest developments have induced Wipro to start developing vacant areas at its campus, a portion of which will be ready in the next 18 months.
On the global trend of contracts being awarded to players like Wipro, Mr Banerjee said: “Previously, high-value contracts were largely restricted to US giants.
But there’s been a change in the pattern and companies are breaking up large contracts into small executable sizes. These are then being supplied to multiple players outside the US with relevant specialisations.”
