Royal Challengers Bengaluru may have cruised to the IPL 2026 title on Sunday, but one fiery moment involving Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill nearly stole the show.

The drama unfolded in the 16th over of RCB's chase when Kohli miscued a drive off Arshad Khan. Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill threw himself forward and appeared to pull off a sensational diving catch. The Titans erupted in celebration, convinced they had finally dismissed the RCB superstar.

But Kohli wasn't buying it.

Even as Gill celebrated, Kohli walked straight towards the Gujarat skipper and appeared to challenge the catch. TV cameras captured the animated exchange, with Kohli seemingly insisting that the ball had touched the ground.

The tension quickly escalated as the on-field umpires sent the decision upstairs.

As thousands inside the stadium waited nervously, the giant screen showed multiple replays. The footage suggested Gill's fingers may not have been completely underneath the ball when it made contact with the turf.

Then came the verdict.

Third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal ruled the catch not out, concluding that the ball had brushed the ground. The decision stunned the Gujarat camp.

Kohli immediately punched the air in celebration and exchanged another glance and a few words with Gill, who looked visibly shocked by the outcome. The crowd erupted as the RCB icon survived what could have been the turning point of the final.

The controversy mirrored a similar moment earlier in the match when Washington Sundar survived after Jordan Cox's catch was also ruled incomplete following a review.

And Gujarat would soon pay a heavy price for Kohli's lifeline.

The former RCB captain made the most of his second chance, smashing an unbeaten 75 off just 42 balls. His innings included nine fours, three sixes and the fastest fifty of his IPL career, reached in only 25 deliveries.

Kohli's masterclass powered RCB to the 156-run target with 12 balls to spare, sealing a five-wicket win and a second consecutive IPL crown.

Earlier, RCB's bowlers had set up the triumph by restricting Gujarat Titans to 155/8. Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar struck early, while Rasikh Salam Dar's brilliant 3/27 kept the Titans under pressure despite Washington Sundar's fighting fifty.

In the end, the catch controversy became one of the defining moments of the IPL 2026 final. Kohli survived, Gujarat were left stunned, and RCB marched to another title.
