Guwahati: The Assam government moved a resolution in the state Assembly backing the early implementation of 33% reservation for women in state assemblies.

Assam Minister for Women and Child Development, Ajanta Neog said the proposal aimed to advance women’s empowerment and ensure broader participation of women in governance following delimitation.“I propose the urgent implementation of one-third reservation for women in all state assemblies across India following delimitation."

Neog said, “Women constitute around 50% of India’s population, and Assam reflects a similar demographic reality. It is the responsibility of the nation to take them forward, not only politically, but socially as well.”

Neog said that Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, introduced in Parliament in 2023 under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The legislation had raised hopes among women across the country for greater political inclusion.

She also referred to the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, introduced in Parliament on April 16 this year to expedite the implementation of the 33% women’s quota in Parliament alongside delimitation-related legislation.

The Bill could not be passed on April 18. Neog said Assam was joining other NDA-ruled states in formally urging the Centre to move forward with the legislation. “I request everyone in this House to approve this historic resolution irrespective of political parties and alliances. I stand here today as a representative of women’s participation in politics. This resolution is not just for Assam, but for women across the country.”
