'I want to become a senior citizen': Harsha Goenka shares powerful lesson on true meaning of growing old through a child's perspective
A young student's dream to become a senior citizen offers a fresh view on ageing. He sees it as a time of freedom, relaxation, and enjoyment. This perspective contrasts with adult worries about growing old. Indian billionaire Harsh Goenka share...

As per the post, a school teacher asked her students a simple question: what did they want to become when they grew up? While most children are expected to dream of becoming doctors, engineers, athletes or artists, one young student gave a surprisingly different answer. The child wrote that he wanted to become a senior citizen.
Child’s surprising dream
Curious about the unusual response, the teacher asked him why. The youngster then explained his reasoning through the eyes of his grandfather. According to the child, being a senior citizen seemed wonderful because his grandfather wakes up late, enjoys afternoon naps, has no homework or tuition classes to attend, spends time in the park playing chess, watches television whenever he wants and enjoys life at his own pace. The child also pointed out that older adults receive discounts on buses, trains and movie tickets, can eat their favourite foods and have the freedom to go wherever they wish.
The innocence of the answer transformed an ordinary classroom moment into a powerful reflection on ageing. While adults often associate growing old with responsibilities, health concerns and the passage of time, the child viewed it from an entirely different perspective. To him, old age was not about limitations but about freedom, comfort, independence and the ability to enjoy life without constant pressure.
Why ageing can be a blessing
Goenka’s post resonated with social media users because it challenged common perceptions of ageing. Through a child’s honest observation, it delivered a meaningful lesson: growing old can be a blessing, offering greater freedom, perspective, happiness and the opportunity to cherish life in ways that younger generations often fail to recognise.
