Karan Johar reveals why Kareena Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are no longer 'gold standard' for people: 'Nobody wants to look...'

The era of celebs being trendsetters is long gone, at least for Hindi-speaking communities. Whereas once upon a time, women were inspired by Sridevi’s glamorous sarees or Rani Mukerji’s casual chic look in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, today female stars no longer dictate fashion trends among the masses. Director Karan Johar recently pointed out how celebs have stopped being aspirational figures for te common man in recent times.

Speaking on The BarberShop with Shantanu, Karan — who is also the founder of the jewellery brand Tyaani, KJo explained how people have become more individualistic today and no longer see celebs as style icons.

“Earlier, there used to be a gold standard that Bollywood has worn it. Now, there is a certain attitude about that too. People are like, ‘Why should I wear this? Kareena has already worn it,’ or ‘Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone have already worn it.’ They don’t want to wear the same thing because they don’t want to come across as someone copying a Bollywood star. Nobody wants to look like a wannabe version of a celebrity anymore. Everybody is seeking individuality..” he explains.


Johar is currently enjoying the strong box office response to Chand Mera Dil, the latest romantic drama produced under Dharma Productions. It stars Ananya Pandey and Lakshya in lead roles.

According to trade-tracking platform Sacnilk, Chand Mera Dil witnessed a relatively modest opening at the domestic box office despite the strong pre-release buzz surrounding the film. On its first day in theatres, the romantic drama reportedly earned approximately ₹2.90 crore net across India.
