Assam Police have summoned senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala regarding cases filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa. The cases were lodged after Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that Sharma possessed multiple passports and undisclosed properties abroad.

An official in the crime branch of Assam Police said Surjewala has been asked to appear before investigators in Guwahati on May 23. The summons reportedly come after statements made by Khera during several hours of questioning by the crime branch earlier this month.

Khera was questioned by the crime branch for several hours on two days. On May 14, Khera said, “I was asked all the questions that are usually asked during an investigation. I have been called next on May 25. I will come again because every responsible citizen must cooperate with an investigation."

The Congress has so far termed the investigation politically motivated, while the BJP has defended the police action, asserting that the matter concerns dignity and accountability in public discourse.

The CM's wife has filed criminal complaints against Khera and others at the Guwahati Crime Branch Police Station under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The Supreme Court had granted anticipatory bail to Khera after the Gauhati High Court rejected his plea. The top court had directed Khera to cooperate with the investigation and appear before Assam Police when required.

Speaking on May 4, after the Assam election results, Sarma had said, “I had made a commitment regarding Pawan Khera, as the Supreme Court has directed him to mark attendance at an Assam Police station. The rest of the film will continue.”

Khera had initially approached the Telangana High Court, which granted him seven-day transit anticipatory bail. However, Assam Police challenged the order in the top court, which stayed the transit bail order and directed Khera to approach the Gauhati High Court.

Subsequently, the Gauhati High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea, following which Khera moved the Supreme Court again. The top court later granted him anticipatory bail.
