When Shah Rukh Khan was frustrated on set
During a candid interaction on Honest Townhall, Jagapathi Babu opened up about an unforgettable experience involving Shah Rukh Khan while discussing the Hindi remake of his iconic Telugu film Anthahpuram. Jagapathi had originally portrayed Sarai Veeraraju, a small-time thief whose emotional transformation becomes central to the 1998 drama directed by Krishna Vamsi. His nuanced performance, especially a pivotal smoking and death sequence toward the film’s climax, left a lasting impact.
When Krishna Vamsi remade the story in Hindi as Shakti: The Power in 2002, Shah Rukh Khan stepped into Jagapathi’s role, portraying Jai Singh opposite Karisma Kapoor’s Nandini, a role originally essayed by Soundarya. While recreating one of Jagapathi’s memorable scenes, Shah Rukh Khan reportedly struggled with the execution, leading to a moment of frustration on set.
Shah Rukh Khan acknowledged the remark later
According to Jagapathi Babu, Shah Rukh Khan made an off-record remark during the process, which was something intense enough that the Telugu actor chose not to publicly repeat it. However, rather than taking offense, Jagapathi viewed Shah Rukh’s reaction as the highest form of professional praise, interpreting it as acknowledgment of the strength and complexity of his original performance.
Years later, Jagapathi Babu personally asked Shah Rukh Khan whether he had truly made that remark. The Bollywood superstar confirmed it, while also apologizing if it had sounded harsh. For Jagapathi, however, the comment remained one of the most meaningful compliments he had ever received from a fellow actor.
