In 2006, Jack Dorsey Noticed How Fast a Simple SMS Could Update a Whole Group; “Make Status a Product” Spark Established the Foundation for Twitter.
On March 21, 2006, Jack Dorsey composed what became known as the first tweet, which simply said, “just setting up my twttr.” While the message at that point might not have foreshadowed the enormity of the events to come, it marked an experiment with a tool based on an easy-to-use principle: enabling people to publish short, real-time messages about their activities. This approach was by no means revolutionary; rather, according to the literature on online communication in journals such as New Media & Society, early social media sites tended to capitalize on pre-existing social practices, such as status updates and message exchange, and adapt them to the new medium.

The platform design was an indication that there had been a move towards instant messaging. Based on findings from a study indexed in PubMed Central, microblogging platforms such as Twitter enabled the exchange and receipt of information instantly, as the mode of posting involved short, snappy pieces. This made the process less cumbersome. One did not have to create elaborate content. It was enough to provide short updates. The first tweet does not mean simply just an initial entry. It was a design choice.

Brevity Changed Communication

Character limitation was one of the main features of Twitter, and affected the style of writing messages and their interpretation. As shown in an article in Information, Communication & Society, limitations concerning the length of messages can affect the way they are formulated and shared among users. Such limitations made Twitter's communication unique. Tweets tended to be more laconic as people focused on providing vital information without unnecessary details. Users could easily keep track of many different conversations due to the format of tweets.

An article published in Computers in Human Behavior notes that microblogs can facilitate rapid communication and are especially useful during events when information needs to be continuously updated. In this regard, Twitter was a perfect tool for news reports and communication on a variety of topics. Not only did the platform facilitate interaction, but it also changed its nature completely. Contrary to regular blogs, Twitter did not provide users with anything extra. This tool was characterized by simplicity as it allowed people to communicate using fewer resources.

Transformed Into a Global System

The move from one message to the entire platform follows the trend that has been noted in the process of digital innovation. In accordance with the data presented in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, those online communities that are similar to traditional ways of communication are easier to scale. The platform of Twitter was built with regard to the already established habit of people to communicate by text messages and instant messaging. With the growth of the platform, the opportunity arose for sharing information quickly and easily through various networks. Users could subscribe to different events, individuals, and topics that were discussed.

The importance of the first tweet is that it determined the general course of further development. The platform that started out small maintained consistency over time. Studies of social media evolution confirm that decisions made at the initial stages of creation significantly influence the future development of the network.
