Cyrus S Poonawalla, founder and chairman of the Serum Institute of India (SII), has crafted a legacy where business scale and measurable social impact progress hand in hand.

Under his leadership, SII has advanced a 'Health For All' vision, with its vaccines estimated to have saved more than 30 million lives globally. By combating diseases such as polio, measles, diphtheria, tetanus, meningitis and Covid-19, the organisation has significantly reduced the disease burden across low- and middle-income countries.

"The founding values of Serum Institute have always been affordability, quality, and access," said Poonawalla. "We started with the belief that life-saving vaccines should not be limited by income or geography. These values continue to guide its global impact, strengthened by investments in science and partnerships."

The Villoo Poonawalla Foundation, established in 2012, drives philanthropy across healthcare, education and community development. The foundation is known for its role in expanding access to affordable healthcare and preventive care alongside its investments in education and community infrastructure for underserved populations.

On the key strengths that family businesses bring to sectors such as healthcare and vaccines, Poonawala said, "Family-owned enterprises bring a long-term perspective and a strong sense of responsibility." "In healthcare, this allows for investment in research, capacity building, and innovation. It also builds continuity and trust, which are essential when working with global partners over long periods," he said.

For Poonawalla, being chosen as the winner in the Philanthropic Leadership category carries profound meaning. "For our family, it is both an honour and a responsibility to continue contributing to public health and social development with the same commitment."
