PM Modi on Thursday spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron to review the evolving situation in West Asia. Both leaders spoke on the urgent need to ensure maritime security in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement following the call, the prime minister said the global leaders expressed concern over regional tensions and agreed on the importance of restoring safety and freedom of navigation through the key shipping route, which handles a significant share of global energy supplies.

"Received a phone call from my dear friend President Emmanuel Macron. We discussed the situation in West Asia and agreed on the need to urgently restore safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. We will continue our close cooperation to advance peace and stability in the region and beyond," PM Modi said in a post on X.

The conversation with Macron comes shortly after PM Modi held a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, marking their second interaction since the outbreak of the ongoing West Asia conflict.

During the discussion, both leaders emphasised the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and secure amid rising tensions.

According to reports, the two leaders also reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership across sectors.

The call, which lasted around 40 minutes, also touched on the broader implications of the conflict, including disruptions to global energy supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade passes, has emerged as a focal point amid the ongoing crisis. Escalating tensions in the region have led to volatility in crude oil prices and concerns over supply chain disruptions globally.
