At the age of 71, Rabindra Nath Biswas, lovingly known as Gaan Dadu, has captured widespread attention online for his soulful voice. Although he always possessed a deep love for music, circumstances never allowed him to transform that passion into a full-time profession—until much later in life. Reflecting on his journey with a chat with The Humans Of Bombay, he shared that he grew up in a modest village near Kolkata. His father practiced law, and like many families of that time, stability and education were prioritized above all else. The unspoken rule was clear: focus on studies, build a secure future, and avoid uncertain paths.

However, his heart was always drawn to melodies. Without any formal training, he quietly nurtured his interest. He would spend hours listening to legendary singers like Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey, trying to replicate their notes in solitude when his father was away.

Finding Freedom in Youth

College brought with it a sense of independence. During this time, his love for singing found expression. After lectures and football games, he and his friends would gather outdoors, filling the open air with songs and laughter. Those moments became cherished memories, where music flowed freely without hesitation.

Balancing Responsibility and Passion

As years passed, life took a practical turn. He became a Life Science teacher, dedicating himself to his profession. Yet, his connection with music never faded. He would participate in small neighborhood events, performing timeless classics and keeping his passion alive in whatever way he could.

Marriage and fatherhood soon followed, and he was blessed with two sons. Interestingly, both children inherited his inclination toward music. Determined not to repeat the restrictions he had experienced, he encouraged them to explore their interests freely, whether in music or any other field. Time passed swiftly, and decades slipped by almost unnoticed.

A Turning Point in Later Years

Last year brought unexpected challenges when he was diagnosed with kidney-related issues. Doctors advised him to rest completely, confining him to his home. The sudden stillness began to affect him deeply, and gradually, he distanced himself even from singing.

Sensing his growing sadness, his sons gently motivated him to return to music. Though initially hesitant, he eventually agreed to practice again. In December, they recorded a Bengali song originally sung by Arijit Singh and shared it online. The response was overwhelming, with viewers from across the world praising his voice. Even notable musicians like Shashwat Sachdev and Salim Merchant appreciated his work.

Rediscovering Life Through Music

Encouraged by the appreciation, he rediscovered his love for singing. Despite his fragile health, music brought him comfort and a renewed sense of identity. Today, his sons actively support him—one manages recordings while the other introduces him to new songs. Through this journey, he has come to understand that life unfolds in its own unique rhythm, often leading us back to what we truly love, even if it takes a lifetime.
