First-ever smart trolley at Hyderabad airport
A few months ago, digital creator Himanshu Sehgal dropped a rather fascinating video on Instagram where he shared his experience of using the smart trolley at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.
When Himanshu Sehgal strolled through the illuminated and well-maintained terminal, the bright blue trolley appeared to be a normal one, found at any airport, used for carrying luggage. But the unusual catch was the screen attached to the handle. As he zoomed in, the screen lit up with a ‘start now’ button, which, upon tapping, opened to another page.
The second page came with a scanner option, where passengers could scan their boarding pass or manually select their flights. To demonstrate the feature, Himanshu Sehgal selected his own flight, and soon after, the screen came up with all the details regarding his flight, including the gate number, flight status, and departure time.

The features do not end here. The screen also provides access to a complete list of cafes and restaurants inside the airport. Besides their own, passengers can also check the total number of gates inside the airport, acting as a virtual assistant while showing their real-time location. What’s more, the service is completely free of cost.
Hyderabad airport’s smart trolley even caught the attention of the Chairperson of the Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra. Back in 2023, he re-shared a clip of a passenger using the smart trolley at the terminal. In his caption, the billionaire industrialist called the feature ‘pretty cool’, admitting that he had never encountered such trolleys at overseas airports during his trips. Anand Mahindra also gave a special shoutout to the airport authorities for their ‘terrific’ innovation.
For the unversed, Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport made headlines in 2020 for becoming the first airport to introduce Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled smart baggage trolleys in India.
