Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mahindra shared a video of the young man and spoke about the criticism he initially faced. Paraphrasing his post, Mahindra noted that the boy had been 'criticised' of cleaning parts of a river just to gain social media attention. However, he added that while people often complain that social media rewards trivial content, if the desire for “likes” can be channelled into meaningful action, it is a positive outcome. He went on to call Bittu Tabahi his Monday Motivation.
Who is Bittu Tabahi?
Bittu Tabahi, a 20-year-old from the small town of Biaora, has gone viral for an extraordinary act of determination. Without waiting for official help or large-scale support, he decided to clean the heavily polluted Ajnar River almost entirely on his own. Armed with little more than his hands and a few basic tools, Bittu began removing plastic waste, algae and debris from the river. His journey, however, was not easy in the beginning. As Bittu shared, he faced a lot of doubt and criticism from people around him. Many discouraged him from taking on such a huge task, saying the river was too polluted, filled with garbage and stagnant water, and impossible for one person to clean. Some even questioned his intentions, assuming he was doing it only for social media attention. Despite the negativity, he chose to continue his efforts with determination.
Despite the criticism, Bittu chose to focus on the task. He began the clean-up on January 26 and continued for weeks, often working alone after initial support faded. Wading into the polluted water, he manually pulled out plastic bags, bottles and thick layers of algae. The work was physically demanding and time-consuming, but he persisted with patience and consistency.
Before the clean-up, the condition of the river was alarming. Large patches of floating waste covered the surface, and in many places, the water itself was barely visible. The river resembled a dumping ground more than a natural water body, highlighting years of neglect and pollution.
What followed was a transformation that surprised many online. Gradually, as the waste was cleared, the river began to regain its natural appearance. The water looked cleaner, and the surroundings appeared more serene. Images and videos of the before-and-after contrast left viewers stunned, with many finding it hard to believe it was the same place.
The internet has since responded with overwhelming appreciation. Social media users have hailed Bittu as a “real hero” and an inspiration, praising his dedication and commitment. At the same time, his story has sparked a larger conversation about environmental responsibility. Many users pointed out that while Bittu’s efforts are commendable, maintaining clean rivers should be a shared responsibility.
Bittu Tabahi’s journey shows that real change starts with just one small step. He inspires not only Anand Mahindra but also all of us as a perfect Monday motivation.
