Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee starts sit-in in protest with party Ministers, MLAs and others leadership at Esplanade. Banerjee slammed BJP-ECI for deleting names through Bengal SIR and said 22 people, who are alive but declared dead in Bengal SIR, will be paraded on stage.

The Chief Minister started her demonstration around 2 PM. Trinamool National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee will also accompany her along with other leaders.

“The Chief Minister will announce her next course of protest programme from there. Dharna will start from March 6,” Trinamool National general Secretary Abhishek Banerjee had announced last Sunday.

The Chief Minister’s dharna comes at a time when 6.5 lakh adjudication cases have been disposed of by the judicial officers till date, out of the total 61 lakh cases, which had been sent for adjudication, following Supreme Court order.

Meanwhile, around 200 judicial officers from Odisha and Jharkhand will be looking into adjudication of eight districts--North and South 24 Parganas, Hooghly, Howrah, Birbhum, East and West Burdwan and Nadia.

The adjudication figures are highest in Murshidabad district, which has over 11 lakh, Malda over 8 lakhs, North 24 Parganas near 6 lakhs, South 24 Parganas has 5 lakh 22 thousand among others.

Abhishek Banerjee had slammed ECI over SIR for putting the majority population in Muslim dominated Malda and Murshidabad "Under Adjudication". “The minorities, SC-ST are particularly targeted and 42% names alone in adjudication are in Malda's constituencies “under the adjudication”. High number of voters in Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas are also “under adjudication,” Abhishek has said.

BJP former state President Sukanta Majumdar said, “Banerjee must start practicing sitting for dharna as she will become the Opposition leader soon after BJP comes to power in 2026.
