In a post on social media, Modi described the UAE leader as “my brother” and said India stands firmly in solidarity with the Gulf nation in these difficult times.
“Spoke with President of the UAE, my brother Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Strongly condemned the attacks on the UAE and condoled the loss of lives in these attacks. India stands in solidarity with the UAE in these difficult times,” the Prime Minister said.
Modi also thanked the UAE leadership for ensuring the safety and well-being of the large Indian community residing in the country. Nearly 3.5 million Indians live and work in the UAE, making it one of the largest expatriate populations in the Gulf region.
He added that India supports efforts towards de-escalation and reiterated the need for regional peace, security and stability amid rising tensions in West Asia.
Rising regional tensions
The Prime Minister’s remarks come against the backdrop of heightened hostilities in the region following US and Israeli military action against Iran.
US President Donald Trump said the objective of the operation was to “ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon.” In an eight-minute video message posted on Truth Social, Trump said, “We’re going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally again obliterated.”
He warned Iran’s armed forces to lay down their weapons in return for “complete immunity” or “face certain death,” and urged the Iranian people to “take over your government” once the operation concludes.
The large-scale military campaign, dubbed Operation Epic Fury by the US, follows weeks of warnings from Washington that military action would follow if Tehran did not agree to a new deal over its nuclear programme.
The US Central Command said the goal was to “dismantle the Iranian regime’s security apparatus, prioritising locations that posed an imminent threat.”
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful and meant for civilian energy purposes.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel and the US had jointly launched an operation to remove what he described as an “existential threat posed by the terrorist regime in Iran.”
