It has been a while since Indian celebrities began approaching courts to safeguard their identities from deepfake videos, online misuse and fake social media accounts. The digital boom has brought convenience, but it has also created new threats. Recently, singer Jubin Nautiyal moved court seeking protection against the unauthorised use of his name and likeness. The Delhi High Court has now stepped in, restraining several entities from using his identity without consent.

Jubin Nautiyal moves Delhi HC over personality rights

In an interim order passed on February 19, Justice Tushar Rao Gedela granted protection to the singer’s personality and publicity rights. The court restrained multiple artificial intelligence platforms, websites and e-commerce portals from exploiting Jubin's name, voice, vocal style, manner of singing, image and likeness without authorisation.

According to Bar and Bench report, the order also directed the blocking and removal of links, videos, websites and mobile applications that violate the singer’s rights.

The court stated “In the considered opinion of this Court, the plaintiff has a prima facie strong case and, having regard to his well-known, popular and well-accepted personality, the balance of convenience is tilted in favour of the plaintiff. In case ex-parte ad-interim injunction and other directions, as sought, are not passed, the irreparable loss and injury which may occasion may not be compensated in monetary terms. The dent and damage to the image and personality of the plaintiff, prima facie, appear to be real and present,” the court observed."

In his plea, Jubin Nautiyal alleged that several AI-based platforms had used generative artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies to replicate his voice and imitate his singing style. The suit pointed to instances where digital avatars, deepfake videos, face morphing content and even unauthorised chatbots were allegedly created around his persona. Such misuse, he argued, not only misleads the public but also affects his professional credibility.

Moreover, during the initial hearing, the High Court questioned whether it had the territorial jurisdiction to entertain the matter, noting that Jubin is based in Uttarakhand. The bench reportedly asked his counsel why the case had been filed in Delhi. However, while raising the query, the court proceeded to pass the interim order granting protection.

With this ruling, Jubin joins a growing list of celebrities who have sought judicial protection against personality rights violations. Actors such as Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Vivek Oberoi and R. Madhavan have previously secured similar interim relief from the Delhi High Court.
