Reliance to invest Rs 10 lakh crore in AI compute, energy, apps: Mukesh Ambani
Reliance Industries and Jio will invest Rs 10 lakh crore to build India’s sovereign AI infrastructure, scale green energy capacity and develop affordable AI applications. Announcing the plan, chairman Mukesh Ambani declared that “Jio will now connect India to the intelligence era,” and pledged to drive down the cost of intelligence just as the company had dramatically reduced the price of mobile data.

“Jio will now connect India to the intelligence era…India cannot afford to rent intelligence. Therefore, we will reduce the cost of intelligence as dramatically as we did the cost of data,” he said at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi on Thursday, as he unveiled the Rs 10 lakh crore investment plan over seven years.

“This is not speculative investment. It is not purchasing valuation,” Ambani said, as India’s largest telecom company goes for public listing this year. “This is patient, disciplined, nation-building capital designed to create durable economic value and strategic resilience for decades to come.” he said.

“Jio Intelligence will build India's sovereign compute infrastructure” through gigawatt-scale data centres and a nationwide edge network. Reliance has already begun construction of a gigawatt-scale campus in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with over 120 megawatts expected to come live in the second half of 2026.

He noted that the biggest constraint in AI today is not talent or innovation, rather it is scarcity and high cost of compute. Reliance will also harness its green energy advantage with upto 10 gigawatts of ready green power surplus anchored by solar in Kutch, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.

The third initiative focuses on distribution of nationwide edge compute. He explained that “an edge compute layer deeply integrated with Jio's network will make intelligence responsive, low latency, and affordable, close to where Indians live, learn, and work.”

“From kirana stores to clinics, from classrooms to farms, intelligence will live at the edge,” Ambani said, adding, “Our resolve is clear. Make intelligence as ubiquitous as connectivity. When compute becomes infrastructure, innovation will become inevitable.”

Calling AI a transformative force, Ambani described it as a “modern-day Akshaya Patra” offering limitless productivity and opportunity.

Making a bold prediction he said, “India will emerge as one of the greatest AI powers in the world in the 21st century,” citing India’s strengths in demography, democracy, development, digital infrastructure, data generation and AI harvest.

Going forward, Jio Intelligence would be guided by five principles - AI for deep tech and advanced manufacturing, multilingual AI across Indian languages, responsibility and data residency, job creation through high-skill work, and building a strong ecosystem with enterprises, startups, IITs, IISc and research institutions.
