As Valentine’s Week begins, stories of lasting love are drawing attention beyond films and celebrity culture. One such story is that of industrialist Anand Mahindra and his wife Anuradha Mahindra. Their relationship began years before business success and public recognition and has continued alongside the growth of one of India’s largest business groups. The story sets the tone for a new series that looks at love stories of business leaders whose personal partnerships evolved with their professional journeys.

The story dates back to 1977, when Anand Mahindra was still a student. During a visit to Indore for a student film project, he met Anuradha, a psychology student from Mumbai studying at Sophia College. Anuradha was 18 at the time.

Over the years, Mahindra went on to build a global business presence. Today, he is the chairman of the Mahindra Group, one of India’s most diversified conglomerates, with interests spanning automobiles, tractors, aerospace, and hospitality across more than 100 countries. Forbes estimates his net worth at $4.1 billion. Despite this, Mahindra has said wealth rankings were never his goal. In 2022, responding to a question on social media about becoming India’s richest person, he said, "I'll never be the richest. Because this was never my wish."

Beyond business, Mahindra’s personal life, including his long-standing marriage to Anuradha Mahindra, continues to draw public interest.

How Anand Mahindra met Anuradha in Indore

Mahindra’s personal life took shape in the early 1980s while he was pursuing higher education. His visit to Indore for a student film project proved decisive, as it was there that he met Anuradha. The decision to step away from his studies for a semester reflected the importance he placed on the relationship, which went on to shape his personal life for decades.

A proposal linked to family tradition

As the relationship progressed, Mahindra proposed to Anuradha using a ring that belonged to his grandmother. The couple married on June 17, 1978. After the wedding, they moved to the United States, where Mahindra continued his education and early professional journey before returning to India to expand the family business.

Who is Anuradha Mahindra

Anuradha Mahindra has built her own professional career. Born in Mumbai, she studied at Sophia College and later at Simmons College in Boston. She entered journalism and publishing, founding the luxury magazine Verve and co-founding Man’s World.

She later served as Editor-in-Chief of Rolling Stone India and worked as an advisor with ARTISANS. Known for maintaining a private life, she and Anand Mahindra rarely share family details publicly. The couple has two daughters, Divya and Aalika.

A partnership that has lasted decades

Nearly four decades after their marriage, Anand and Anuradha Mahindra are often cited as an example of a stable partnership in public life. Mahindra has credited his wife for her support through different phases of his career.

Their story, which began during his student years in Indore and continued alongside the growth of a global business group, reflects choices shaped by personal commitment as much as professional ambition.
