“It is our destiny that there are some people whose aim is something else. They are treading Hitler’s path and want to create a Hitler-type regime,” he said. The NC president said Nazism ended in Germany when Hitler shot himself. "A time will come here as well when these extremists will go away,” Abdullah told reporters here.
Over the past few weeks incidents of assault on Kashmiris in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Haryana were reported. Videos of Kashmiris being harassed were circulated on social media triggering widespread reaction from political parties in Kashmir.
Earlier, jailed Lok Sabha member from Baramulla constituency of northern Kashmir, Engineer Rashid, currently lodged in Tihar jail, also wrote to the chief ministers of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh seeking immediate and stern action against those involved in assaults and humiliation of Kashmiris, including those working or selling shawls.
The opposition People's Democratic Party demanded filing of cases against the accused, while People’s Conference chief Sajad Lone termed it a “national security” issue that needs immediate attention.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who heads Muttahida Majlis Ulema, an amalgam of around 50 religious and social organisations in J&K and Ladakh, has also condemned the harassment and attacks on Kashmiris and demanded action against the attackers.
Meanwhile, Abdullah prayed for peace and friendship with India’s neighbouring countries as the new year set in. “The new year has begun. God should send rain and snow to ease our difficulties. I pray that peace prevails in our country, and that we become friends with neighbours so that we can emerge out of these difficulties,” he said adding, “Bangladesh was an old friend of India and the relationship needs to be strengthened.”
