New Delhi: Focussing on the water security and sustainable development, The UP government has set a goal of ensuring the safe reuse of 50 percent of wastewater by 2030 and 100 percent by 2035, enabling it to be used in industries as well as agriculture. A comprehensive policy, phased action plan, and a robust implementation mechanism have been developed to achieve this goal.

According to a press release, this initiative will not only prove to be a milestone towards water conservation but will also build a strong foundation for safe and sustainable water management for future generations.

As per the plan, the wastewater will no longer be considered a burden, but will be developed as an economic resource. Under a policy being formulated by the state government, treated water will be used for municipal purposes, industry, agriculture, and non-potable domestic purposes. This will reduce pressure on groundwater and strengthen environmental balance.

In the release, Joginder Singh, Project Director of the State Clean Ganga Mission, stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, several works are being done to conserve rivers. The Yogi government has also developed a clear roadmap for wastewater management.

Under phase 1 (2025–2030), where STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) and collection facilities already exist, the target is to reuse 50 per cent of wastewater.

Under Phase II (2030–2035), capacity expansion in these areas will ensure 100% reuse of wastewater.

Under the third Phase (by 2045), where treatment and collection facilities are not currently in place, facilities will be developed in a phased manner to utilize 30%, then 50% and finally 100% of wastewater.

“The primary objective of this policy of the Yogi government is to reduce the growing pressure on water resources, strengthen environmental protection, and ensure sustainable development in urban and rural areas. This plan is not only environmentally beneficial but will also bring far-reaching economic benefits to the state,” the release mentioned.

Joginder Singh, Project Director of the State Clean Ganga Mission, in the release, claimed that Uttar Pradesh is steadily emerging as a national model in the field of water conservation and water management. “The Yogi government is now going to transform wastewater into a resource for development,” he said.

Separate plans are being developed for urban, rural, and non-potable water use, the release said. Water conservation will be promoted alongside economic development. Uttar Pradesh is poised to become a model for water management, the release further mentioned.
