Anand Mahindra wants you to see this ‘world’s most sophisticated engineering marvel’ temple that even PM Modi visited
Anand Mahindra has highlighted the Brihadeeswara Temple's 11th-century engineering, calling it "the world’s most sophisticated ancient engineering." Built without mortar using interlocking granite blocks, the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Thanjavu...

In a post on X, Mahindra spoke about his growing fascination with India’s ancient temples, describing them as far more than places of worship. He said such sites offer a powerful visual and intellectual experience, blending spiritual significance with extraordinary engineering skill.
Focusing on the Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, Mahindra noted that the monument, built between 1003 and 1010 CE, was constructed using massive granite blocks without the use of mortar. Instead, the stones were secured through an advanced interlocking technique that has enabled the structure to withstand earthquakes for nearly a millennium. His comments have struck a chord online, particularly with younger audiences rediscovering India’s architectural heritage through digital platforms.

All about Brihadeeswara Temple
One of India’s largest temples, the Brihadeeswara Temple—also known as Peruvudaiyar Kovil—is located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, represented as a massive ‘Lingam’, the temple was constructed around 1010 AD by the Chola king Rajaraja Chola I. It is recognized as one of the three ‘Great Living Chola Temples’, alongside the Gangaikondacholeeswaram Temple and Airavatesvara Temple, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.A key highlight of the temple is the colossal statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s sacred bull, which measures 13 feet in height and 16 feet in width and is carved from a single rock. The temple complex is enclosed by fortified walls adorned with intricate rock carvings, giving it a majestic appearance. Its main tower, or ‘Vimana’, soars to 216 feet, making it the tallest of its kind in the world. The entire structure is built from granite, while the main ‘Gopurams’—the temple’s gateways—feature elaborate sculptures and intricate detailing.
Standing as a testament to the might and vision of the Chola dynasty, the temple is believed to have been completed in just seven years—a remarkable feat given the scale of its sculptures, carvings, and architectural complexity.
