Born in London to Indian parents, Ullal spent her formative years in New Delhi, where she studied at the Convent of Jesus & Mary. She later moved to the United States to pursue engineering, earning a bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from San Francisco State University, followed by a master’s degree in Engineering Management from Santa Clara University in 1986. In recognition of her contributions to technology, she was awarded an honorary doctorate in engineering in 2025.Ullal’s professional journey spans more than three decades across the heart of Silicon Valley. Before Arista, she held senior roles at Cisco Systems, where she led the data centre and switching businesses and was credited with building multi-billion-dollar product lines. Her earlier stints included work at AMD and Fairchild Semiconductor, as well as engineering assignments designing advanced chips for global clients such as IBM and Hitachi.
She joined Arista Networks in 2008, when the company was still a young and unprofitable challenger in the networking market.
Under her leadership, Arista steadily transformed into a major supplier of high-speed cloud networking solutions for hyperscalers and large enterprises. The company’s focus on software-driven networks positioned it well for the rapid expansion of cloud computing and, more recently, AI-driven data centres.
