'I’m human… it hurts': Sophie Gregoire breaks silence on ex-husband Justin Trudeau's romance with Katy Perry

Sophie Gregoire, estranged wife of former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has opened up about navigating her emotions as her ex’s high-profile romance with pop superstar Katy Perry dominates headlines. Speaking candidly on the “Arlene Is Alone” podcast, as reported by People, Gregoire admitted it’s “normal” to feel shaken when an ex moves on — especially with someone world-famous.

“We’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal,” she said, adding that while the spectacle around Trudeau and Perry’s relationship can be overwhelming, she chooses to “listen to the music instead of the noise.”

Gregoire said she allows herself to feel everything — from crying and screaming to laughing — but stressed the importance of choosing how to react. “I’m a super tender heart,” she said, “but it’s my decision after that, between the emotion and the reaction.”


Her remarks come just weeks after Trudeau and Perry made their first public appearance as a couple on October 25 in Paris for the singer’s birthday. The pair were first spotted together in July strolling with their dogs in Canada.

Gregoire, who separated from Trudeau in 2023 after 18 years of marriage, said she’s learning to process disappointment, anger and sadness without slipping into “reactive mode.” As a mental health advocate, she emphasised the need to truly feel emotions — but not be ruled by them. “You can stay in that reactive mode, but you’ll suffer the consequences,” she noted.

Now 50, she said she’s realised that people “meet life from where they are inside,” and it’s up to her to decide how much others’ actions affect her happiness.

Despite living separate lives, Gregoire said she and Trudeau remain united as co-parents to their three children — Xavier, 18, Ella-Grace, 16, and Hadrien, 11. “Our family is our greatest creation,” she said. “We’re going to feed it together, even if we’re on different life paths.”
