Union minister Kiren Rijiju hit out at Sayeda Hameed, a former planning commission member under the Manmohan Singh government, for supporting Bangladeshis in India. After visiting some evicted sites in Assam on Sunday, Hameed had said: "Bangladeshis are also human beings; the earth is very big, even Bangladeshis can live here... Why should a human being be thrown out so mercilessly?"

Reacting to this, Rijiju posted on X: "It is not about religion, but our land! If Assam becomes demographically vulnerable, the remaining states of Northeast are in physical danger for the Indian union. Rahul Gandhi and his gang want them in the voter list and become Indian citizens!"

"Misleading in the name of humanity. It's about our land and identity. Why are the minority Buddhists, Christians, Hindus & Sikhs in Bangladesh and Pakistan persecuted and tortured? Sayeda Hameed may be close to Sonia Gandhi & Rahul Gandhi but shouldn't support illegal migrants," he stated on X.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reiterated that Bangladeshis are not welcome in Assam and that illegal infiltrators have been grabbing Assam's lands. "Bangladeshis are not welcome in Assam, it is not their land. Anyone sympathising with them may accommodate them in their own backyards."
