Calling it a "diplomatic failure", Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Centre over the imposition of 50% tariffs on Indian goods by US President Donald Trump.

He also suggested that India should respond to this firmly. Banerjee strongly condemned Trump's observations about the Indian economy.

"Trump said that India's economy is dead. I do not agree. No one has the power to kill the Indian economy surviving on the love and affection of 140 crore Indians. I can say that the Indian economy is in the ICU. From bad, it has become worse in the last 10 years. By imposing a 50% tariff, there will be substantial job loss. Exports will be down. This is the result of the poor foreign policy of the Indian government," he said.
