Obama office rejects Trump's 'treason' charge, calls it 'weak attempt at distraction'
Former President Barack Obama’s office issued a strongly worded response on Tuesday to President Donald Trump’s unprecedented allegations accusing Obama and his administration of “treason” related to the 2016 election interference investigation. The accusations stem from recently released documents and statements by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who alleges a “treasonous conspiracy” by Obama officials.

In an official statement, Obama spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush condemned the charges as “a weak attempt at distraction,” asserting that the allegations are an effort to divert public attention amid ongoing political controversies.

Rodenbush emphasized, “Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response, But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one.”

Background on the accusations

The accusations originated from a report released by Tulsi Gabbard last Friday that accuses Obama-era officials, including the former FBI Director James Comey and others, of fabricating intelligence to falsely implicate Russia in manipulating the 2016 presidential election.

President Trump, speaking from the Oval Office on Tuesday during a meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., doubled down on these allegations, naming former President Obama as the leader who “initiated” what he described as criminal acts involving Obama, Joe Biden, and prominent intelligence officials. Trump declared, “He’s guilty... This was treason.”

Obama’s Office Pushback

Rodenbush’s response directly rejected the core claims, underscoring that nothing in the newly released documents undermines the widely accepted conclusion, corroborated by multiple credible investigations, that Russia indeed attempted to influence the 2016 election but did not succeed in changing any votes. This conclusion was reinforced by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee’s final report in 2020, chaired by Senator Marco Rubio.

“Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes,” Rodenbush said.

Legal experts note that accusations of treason are significant given that treason is the rare federal crime explicitly defined in the US Constitution and carries the possibility of the death penalty. However, no credible evidence presented so far substantiates Trump’s claims against Obama and his officials.
