'Javed ne meri shaadi barbaad kar di': Aamir Khan reveals how Pakistan cricketer spoiled his first marriage with Reena Dutta

Aamir Khan, one of India's most well-known actors, recently shared a story from his early life about his secret wedding with Reena Dutta. The two got married quietly when Aamir was just 21, before the release of his first film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. They had to hide their marriage from their families, especially because Reena's mother had asked her not to meet Aamir.

India-Pakistan match overshadowed their big day

In a new interview, Aamir said that on the day of their court marriage, the couple returned home thinking they would be questioned about their absence. “Mujhe laga sab puchenge kahaan the itni der,” Aamir said. But instead, everyone was watching the India-Pakistan cricket match.

That match turned out to be a historic one, remembered for Javed Miandad’s last-ball six. Aamir recalled, “It was India-Pakistan match day. The same match where Javed Miandad hit a six on the last ball. We were winning that match so nobody cared to ask us about our absence for so long. I too joined them and was watching cricket, however, Javed’s six ruined it all.”


He added, “Once I happened to meet him on the flight when I told him, ‘Javed bhai aapne theek nahi kiya. Aapne meri shadi barbaad kardi.’ He was like, ‘Kaise?’ I said, ‘Usi din aapne chakka mara tha. Depression mein chala gaya tha mai.’”

Reena’s family upset after learning about the wedding

Reena Dutta’s parents later found out about the wedding and were not happy. Her father suffered a heart attack after hearing the news. However, this incident eventually brought the two families closer, and Reena’s family accepted the marriage. In time, Aamir’s sister Farhat got married to Reena’s brother.

Aamir and Reena eventually separated and got divorced in 2002.

Khan’s latest film now in theatres

Aamir Khan was last seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, released on June 20. The film, directed by RS Prasanna, is described as a spiritual successor to Aamir’s 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. It is a sports-based comedy-drama and features Genelia Deshmukh along with 10 new actors.
