The batter now has two centuries in as many matches as the captain of India, while it was his seventh Test ton. The batter reached the milestone off 199 balls with a boundary against Joe Root.
After being put into bat first, India lost KL Rahul early. Karun Nair and Yashasvi Jaiswal put on a little partnership before the former fell at the stroke of lunch. Gill, batting at No. 4, grinded hard for his century and stitched important partnerships with Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. His knock was laced with 12 boundaries and ended the day at 114 not out.
Earlier, Jaiswal, who had also smashed a century in the first Test, missed out on another ton by just 13 runs, having been dismissed by Ben Stokes for 87 runs.
Rishabh Pant scored 25 runs, while Ravindra Jadeja was unbeaten on 41 as India scored 310/5 at the end of the day's play.
For England Chris Woakes picked up two wickets, while Stokes, Brydon Carse and Shoaib Bashir picked a wicket each.
