L2: Empuraan, the sequel to Mohanlal’s 2019 blockbuster Lucifer, continues to set cash registers ringing at the box office. The Malayalam movie has now grossed over Rs 100 crore domestically.

Starring Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead, L2: Empuraan, released on March 27, has now become the highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all time. The action thriller went past Manjummel Boys to achieve this feat. Empuraan’s global collections are Rs 241.5 crore,beating the lifetime total of Manjummel Boys (Rs 241 crore).

L2: Empuraan box office collection report

In 12 days, the action thriller has become the biggest Malayalam film in terms of overseas box office collection, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. Empuraan is the third-highest grossing Malayalam movie in India, just behind 2018 (Rs 110.5 crore) and Aadujeevitham (Rs 167.50 crore).

If we look at the movie’s day 12 box office collection, L2: Empuraan managed to collect Rs 1.75 crore on Monday to record a net collection of Rs 100.10 crore in India.

The Mohanlal-starrer continues to perform well in India as well as overseas. According to Gulf News, Empuraan has managed to earn over $9.36 million at the UAE box office.

Other overseas markets, like North America, have also contributed to the film’s success. Empuraan raked in $1.27 million in the region within a few days.

Empuraan star cast

The thriller includes a star-studded cast led by Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran. L2: Empuraan also features Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, Jerome Flynn, Rick Yune, Abhimanyu Singh and Eriq Ebouaney. The film follows the story of Khureshi Ab'raam (Mohanlal), a few years after the events of Lucifer, as he heads a powerful crime syndicate.

The ending of Empuraan revealed that the third part, L3: The Beginning, would focus on the origins of Khureshi Ab'raam and how he entered the world of crime.


Empuraan controversies

The film has been facing controversies despite its box office success. After L2: Empuraan released, there was criticism of how the movie depicted the 2002 Gujarat riots. The makers later made 24 ‘voluntary cuts’ in the movie after it was released.

Apart from that, the Enforcement Directorate has been looking into alleged financial irregularities by Empuraan producer Gokulam Gopalan. The authorities raided multiple offices of Gopalan’s chit fund company due to alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). On an unrelated note, the Income Tax Department has sent a notice to actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran, who helmed the film, regarding discrepancies in his income back in 2022.
