Mohanlal’s L2: Empuraan set the cash registers ringing when it hit theatres on March 27.The Prithviraj Sukumaran directorial has continued to march towards success. The Malayalam actioner has earned over Rs 88 crore at the domestic box office.

L2: Empuraan is the sequel to Prithviraj Sukumaran’s 2019 hit Lucifer. With its recent success, Empuraan has surpassed Fahad Faasil’s Aavesham and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s The Goat Life in terms of earnings. It is now the third-highest grossing Malayalam film in India, according to TOI.

L2: Empuraan box office

As per Sacnilk, L2: Empuraan has minted Rs 88.25 crore (net) domestically till now. The film grossed Rs 21 crore on its opening day. The Mohanlal-starrer reported a fall in its earnings on Day 2, but managed to rally over the Eid weekend, giving a close contest to Salman Khan’s Sikandar in places.


On Day 8, Empuraan recorded a collection of Rs 3.9 crore, reporting a fall of over 30 percent in its earnings. The film has earned Rs 103.25 (gross) domestically.

The actioner has also performed well internationally. L2: Empuraan collected Rs 133 crore overseas, taking its worldwide earnings to Rs 236.25 crore.

Aside from Mohanlal, L2: Empuraan stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Rick Yune, Jerome Flynn, Sachin Khedekar,Suraj Venjaramoodu and Abhimanyu Singh.

L2: Empuraan: Controversies

Despite its box office success, Empuraan has not been free of controversies. Some scenes of the movie were cut after its release after criticism emerged regarding the film’s depiction of the 2002 Gujarat riots. The makers made a total of 24 cuts to the film and sent the re-edited version to the cinemas.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday, April 4, conducted searches at the offices of one of the producers of the movie- Kerala-based businessman Gokulam Gopalan. Gopalan and some other people’s offices were raided due to allegations of foreign exchange violation, as per PTI.


L2: Empuraan: Future of the franchise

The movie sets the stage for Lucifer 3, as the third part is tentatively called. The third part of the franchise will delve into the past of Khureshi Ab'raam, essayed by Mohanlal. The film will focus on Khureshi Ab'raam’s rivalry with the Shen Triad. Rick Yune, who appeared at the end of Empuraan, is expected to play the leader of the criminal association. Mohanlal’s son Pranav Mohanlal could portray the younger version of Khureshi Ab'raam in Lucifer 3, as per reports. The film is expected to be the final part of the franchise.
