Telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said satellite communication is a "complementary technology" to mainline terrestrial networks, and it's the government's responsibility to ensure consumers take the final call on their preferred broadband technology.

Speaking at the summit on Friday, he added that satellite technology is a complementary solution as it can enable vital connectivity in remote locations where it's a challenge to set up a RAN network, roll out towers or even lay optic fibre cable (OFC).

Likewise, if terrestrial networks get completely destroyed, in the event of a natural disaster, the only way communications can happen is through satellites, the minister said.
