Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with King Charles at Sandringham House. Trudeau wrapped up his UK trip with a private audience with the British monarch on the morning of Monday, March 3.

Before the visit, Trudeau had interacted with the media about the meet. The Canadian PM had said that he would discuss matters that were important to his nation and people, as per Global News. Talking about what weighed the most on people’s minds, the leader said, “I can tell you that nothing seems more important to Canadians right now than standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation.”


Many took this to be a jibe at US President Donald Trump’s comments on Canada. The Republican leader has frequently called the US’ northern neighbour as its “51st state,” leading to a low point in relations between Washington and Ottawa.

King Charles-Justin Trudeau talk

Trudeau’s visit comes just a few days after Donald Trump received a letter inviting him from King Charles inviting him for a visit. As per the BCC, the two leaders will meet in Scotland to talk about Trump's potential state visit to the UK for the second time.

Usually, US leaders who have been re-elected do not get offered state visits. They have been invited for lunch or tea with the monarch. King Charles’ letter to Trump proposed a meeting in Scotland, where the 47th US President owns two golf courses, to discuss an unprecedented second visit.

Uk Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer presented Trump with the letter on Thursday during his official visit to the White House. The letter offered a meeting at either Balmoral Castle or Dumfries House to discuss the logistics of a second state visit.

US-Canada ties

Trump’s comments on Canada and the imposition of tariffs have worsened relations between the two allies. Accusing Mexico and Canada of enabling the flow of illegal drugs and migrants into the country, the US President has threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on the nations from Tuesday, March 4.

Howard Lutnick, the Commerce Secretary, said that tariffs will be levied, but the exact details of the taxes will be decided by Trump and his team of negotiators.

The tariffs were levied soon after Trump came to power but postponed later. Canadian Internal Trade Minister Anita Anand said that her country is prepared for every eventuality and will defend their economy.
