Pope Francis was admitted to a hospital in Rome for bronchitis treatment on Friday, according to the Vatican. The Pope has cancelled all scheduled events for the next three days.

Pope Francis, who has experienced breathlessness in recent days and relied on officials to read his speeches, proceeded with his scheduled morning meetings before being admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital, the Vatican said in a statement.

The cancelled events include the Jubilee Audience, a public gathering with pilgrims on February 15, Holy Mass on February 16, and a meeting with artists on February 17.

Pope Francis’ hospitalisation

Pope Francis was hospitalised for further diagnostic tests and to continue treatment for persistent bronchitis in a controlled medical environment.

The 88-year-old Argentine pontiff, who has led the Catholic Church since 2013, will stay in the exclusive papal suite, which includes a private chapel, according to a report in AFP.

Having had part of his lung removed in his youth, Pope Francis has been struggling with breathing difficulties for over a week, frequently delegating the reading of his speeches to aides.

Pope Francis' health issues

The Pope, 88, has faced recurrent health problems, including influenza, over the past two years.

In 2021, he underwent surgery for diverticulitis, a painful condition, and had another operation in 2023 to repair a hernia.

Last month, the Pope was seen wearing a sling after injuring his right forearm in a fall at his residence, although the Vatican confirmed there were no broken bones. This incident followed another fall in December that left him with bruises on his face.

He also said that leading the Church is not about physical strength but about wisdom (the head) and compassion (the heart), rather than relying on physical abilities (the legs).
