In his new memoir named ‘Source Code: My Beginnings’, Bill Gates actually shares the details of his early relationship with Steve Ballmer while highlighting the crucial role of Steve Ballmer as a business partner and friend, reported Business Insider. Bill Gates met Steve Ballmer for the very first time in a graduate economics class at the Harvard University in the year 1976 and recognized that Steve Ballmer shared his ‘excess energy’.

According to Business Insider, Bill Gates describes Steve Ballmer as someone who boosted his social life and possessed an unusual combination of brains, physicality and also social skills. Steve Ballmer reportedly managed the football team of the university, oversaw advertising at its student newspaper and also was the president of its literary magazine.

Bill Gates recalls seeing Steve Ballmer ‘expend just as much energy pacing and bouncing on the sidelines’ at a football game while Steve Ballmer also heavily widened the social circle of Bill Gates and helped him eventually enter the exclusive Fox Club.

Recognizing the dire need for a dedicated business partner, Bill Gates then offered Steve Ballmer a 4% stake in Microsoft to actually convince him to leave business school and then join the company in the year 1980, asserted Business Insider. Adding onto that, Bill Gates also felt that he needed a partner to discuss key decisions, manage finances and handle numerous responsibilities as well whereas that 4% stake is now worth more than $120 billion.

Steve Ballmer served as CEO of Microsoft from the year 2000 to the year 2014 and as of November 2024, his personal wealth is estimated at around $145 billion, noted Business Insider.
