China is six times ahead, India's manufacturing dream too audacious, says Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy
Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy highlighted significant challenges India faces in its quest to rival China's manufacturing prowess at the ‘ELCIA Tech Summit 2024.’ He emphasized the need for improved public governance and government support ...

China Far Ahead in Manufacturing
Murthy highlighted that China is far ahead in the race to become a global manufacturing hub. "China has already become the factory of the world. Around 90% of things in supermarkets and home depots in other countries are manufactured in China. They have six times the GDP of India. It is too audacious of us to say India will become the manufacturing hub," he said. This comparison underscores the significant gap India needs to bridge to rival China's manufacturing prowess.
The Scale of China's Economy
Murthy pointed out that China's economy is significantly larger than India's. "China's GDP is estimated to be right behind the US at around USD 17 trillion, compared to India's GDP, which is above or around USD 3 trillion," he noted. This stark difference highlights the economic gap between the two countries.
Government's Role in Manufacturing
Murthy emphasized the critical role of government support and public governance in achieving manufacturing growth. "For manufacturing, by and large, the domestic contribution is more, and the government plays a big role in the success of manufacturing. Unfortunately, the response time, transparency, accountability, speed, and excellence in public governance in a country like India still need to improve," he stated. Murthy stressed that reducing the interface between government and industry is essential for fostering manufacturing growth.
The Impact of Artificial Intelligence
Addressing concerns over the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on labor, Murthy expressed confidence in the resilience of human creativity. "AI will not replace designers and individuals implementing large-scale application systems, simply because they are too complex. There will have to be huge data dictionaries, data programs, and interconnectivity between all. The creativity and power of the human mind are superior to this system," he asserted. Murthy believes that AI's rise will not eliminate jobs but will open new avenues for human creativity.
Entrepreneurs and Market Assessment
Murthy also discussed the importance of market assessment for entrepreneurs. "Entrepreneurs need to learn to assess the market and estimate the possible size they can capture. They must be able to produce simple mathematical models to bring higher value leverage, vis-à-vis all other ideas in the market. This knowledge and talent are mandatory for success," he explained. This insight is crucial for entrepreneurs aiming to succeed in a competitive market.
