US Department of War adds OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil, xAI’s Grok to military AI platform GenAI.mil

The US Department of War on Monday announed that it has expanded its use of artificial intelligence by adding OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil and Starshield AI’s Grok for Government to GenAI.mil, its enterprise generative AI platform for military personnel.

Both AI systems have been accredited for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) at Impact Level 5 (IL5), allowing them to be deployed for secure enterprise use within the department.

The department said it has launched OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil as the latest frontier AI capability on GenAI.mil. The deployment represents the adoption phase of an enterprise partnership between the department and OpenAI established in 2025.

ChatGPT Mil brings the familiar ChatGPT experience into the department’s secure environment, with features including chat, file handling, projects and custom GPTs. Additional capabilities will be introduced over time, the department said.

The tool is designed to support document-heavy, unclassified work across areas such as planning, policy, logistics and administration. It is also built to scale across the department’s more than 3 million personnel.

The department said the deployment could help automate routine tasks and free up personnel to focus on more critical projects across the Joint Force.

Grok for Government

Alongside ChatGPT Mil, the department has also launched Starshield AI’s Grok for Government on GenAI.mil.

Grok for Government offers capabilities including deep-thinking inference, adaptive reasoning modes — Auto, Fast and Expert — as well as customisable workspaces, persistent projects and reusable “playbooks” designed to capture and scale institutional knowledge.

The department said these capabilities could provide productivity gains and improve knowledge continuity and collaboration for warfighters. Potential applications range from market research and analysis for acquisition professionals to supply chain management for logisticians.

The addition of both ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government turns GenAI.mil into a broader multi-model AI ecosystem for the US military.

The department said GenAI.mil has already onboarded more than 1.7 million unique users since its launch nine months ago. The platform is intended to serve the department’s more than 3 million personnel.

Bringing multiple frontier AI systems onto the same platform also reduces dependence on a single AI vendor, according to the department, while encouraging competition among US AI companies.

The deployments are part of the Department of War’s AI Acceleration Strategy and its push to make enterprise AI applications a force multiplier across the Joint Force.

Through its Chief Digital and AI Office (CDAO) and the Office of the Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, the department said it will continue scaling frontier AI for military missions and decision-making.

The launches also support the White House’s AI Action Plan and the department’s broader effort to integrate advanced AI into military operations while maintaining secure environments for sensitive work.
