Google is preparing to introduce one of the most significant changes to its search experience since the platform launched more than two decades ago. The company has announced a redesigned search bar that reflects the growing influence of artificial intelligence on how people interact with online information.

For years, internet users have relied on short keyword-based searches to find answers. A simple phrase such as "World Cup" was often enough to generate relevant results. However, the rise of AI-powered tools has changed user behaviour, with people increasingly asking detailed questions in a conversational format.

To support this shift, Google is expanding and redesigning its search bar, making it larger and more interactive. The new interface is designed to accommodate longer and more complex queries, allowing users to communicate with Search in a way that feels more natural.

The update was unveiled during Google's annual developer conference and represents a major evolution of the company's flagship product. Instead of limiting searches to a few words, users will be encouraged to type complete questions and requests. For example, rather than searching for a broad topic, users may ask detailed questions that require more context and nuanced answers.

Beyond text input, the redesigned search experience will also include the ability to upload videos and documents directly into Search. This additional functionality expands the ways users can seek information and receive relevant responses, making Search more versatile than ever before.

At the centre of the new experience is Gemini 3.5 Flash, Google's latest AI model. The technology will power several advanced features aimed at creating a more conversational and intelligent search environment. One of these features is a chatbot-style interface that allows users to ask follow-up questions without starting a new search from scratch.

This conversational capability is intended to make information discovery more seamless. Instead of refining searches repeatedly with new keywords, users can continue a discussion with Search and receive responses that build on previous interactions.

Google is also introducing AI assistants capable of automating parts of the search process. These assistants can monitor specific topics or tasks on behalf of users and provide updates when new information becomes available.

A practical example is apartment hunting. Rather than repeatedly checking property websites, users could rely on AI assistants to track listings and notify them when suitable options appear. This approach reduces the need for manual searching and helps users stay informed without constant monitoring.

The changes present significant opportunities for Google as AI reshapes digital behaviour. According to the company, people tend to search more frequently when using AI-powered search features. Longer and more detailed queries also provide a deeper understanding of user interests and intent.

The enhanced search experience is expected to create new possibilities for connecting consumers with businesses and retailers. Improved shopping-related capabilities can help users discover products more efficiently while giving companies additional opportunities to reach potential customers.

Google's business performance highlights the importance of Search to its overall strategy. The company reported that ad clicks increased by 6 per cent over the past year, while the amount charged per click rose by 7 percent. At the same time, annual profit has more than doubled since 2022, reaching $132 billion.

As AI continues to influence the way people access information, Google's latest redesign signals a major shift in the future of search. By combining conversational AI, automation, and richer input options, the company is aiming to create a more dynamic and intelligent search experience for users around the world.
