Anthropic is bringing its Claude AI models to India, with requests made through Amazon Web Services’ Amazon Bedrock now processed within the country.

The move is aimed at Indian banks, government institutions and large enterprises that have been wary of deploying AI models because of data residency and regulatory requirements.

Claude models including Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are now available for in-country inference in India through Amazon Bedrock, Anthropic said on Monday.

The company said requests sent through the India endpoint will be processed on servers located in India, giving organisations more control over where their data and AI workloads are handled.

“In August, we committed to bringing Claude inference to India, and we are delivering on that promise,” said Irina Ghose, managing director, India, Anthropic.

“Our customers, especially in regulated sectors and government, want to use Claude on their most critical work, with requests processed in the country. From today, they can,” she said.

Data residency is becoming an increasingly important consideration for companies deploying AI in India, particularly in sectors such as banking, payments, insurance and government, where organisations handle large amounts of sensitive data.

Anthropic said Claude deployments through Amazon Bedrock in India also include audit trails and access controls for risk and compliance teams.

The company said Reliance, CRED and other customers tested the capability during a private preview. Companies including TCS, Kotak Bank, Mahindra Group and Godrej Industries have also welcomed the move, pointing to regulatory requirements, performance, resilience and lower latency as reasons for running AI inference locally.

“In-country inference widens the options available to Indian banks,” said Vijay Narayanan, head of innovation and AI at Kotak Bank. “At Kotak, we built a single AI platform with governance designed in from the start, which lets us adopt new capabilities like this responsibly and at pace.”

For companies operating under India's data and regulatory requirements, keeping AI workloads within the country could make it easier to move AI applications from pilots to wider production use.

The launch is also part of Anthropic's broader push in India, which the company describes as one of its largest markets globally.

Anthropic opened its Bengaluru office in February and has been expanding its India team and partnerships. The company also held its first Claude certification programme for partners in Bengaluru in August, certifying up to 5,000 people.

Claude is already being used across several large Indian companies.

TCS is rolling out Claude to 50,000 employees, while Infosys has set up an Anthropic Centre of Excellence. Kotak Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank and NPCI are using Claude for engineering and employee productivity, with NPCI building its agentic AI platform AiNxt on Claude.

Companies such as Reliance, Mahindra & Mahindra and Godrej Industries are deploying Claude across their businesses, while CRED, Razorpay, Swiggy, Zomato, Invideo and Freshworks are using it across products and engineering.

The local inference capability could give Anthropic another advantage as global AI companies compete for India's enterprise AI market, where data governance and the ability to keep sensitive workloads within the country are becoming increasingly important.
