How to check SBI savings account balance

If you have a savings account with the State Bank of India (SBI), here are six ways to check your account balance. Remember, SBI has done away with the requirement of maintaining minimum balance in its savings accounts.

One should be aware of the correct balance in one's savings bank account. For instance, before issuing a cheque for a payment or swiping your debit card to make purchases, it is a good practice to check the balance to avoid cheque bouncing charges or the card getting declined.

If you have a savings account with the State Bank of India (SBI), here are six ways to check your account balance. SBI has done away with the requirement of maintaining minimum balance in its savings accounts. This was announced via a press release on March 11, 2020.

  • Via Net banking facility
One of the most common ways to check the balance is by logging into your account via SBI's Net banking facility. You can login to your account by visiting www.onlinesbi.com and entering your user ID and password.


Once you have successfully logged in to your account, the webpage will show your bank account number, branch name and hyperlink for the available balance and transactions.

Click on 'Click here for balance' to check the balance in your savings bank account.

  • Call on toll-free number
If you do not have access to the Net banking facility or cannot access it, then another way to check the balance is by calling the toll-free number.

Call 1800-11-2211 or 1800-425-3800 and follow the instructions to know your bank account balance. Remember, you must call from your registered mobile number to use this facility.

  • Via SBI ATM
To check your SBI savings account balance you can visit the nearest SBI ATM. If you are checking your bank account balance via an ATM, then an SMS will be sent to your registered mobile number to inform you about such a request. This facility has been launched as a security measure to ensure that the customer knows that such a transaction has been initiated on his/her debit card and avoid any chances of scam or fraud.

The facility was announced by the bank via a tweet on its official Twitter handle.

  • Via mobile banking
If you have registered for SBI's mobile banking service, then you can use this facility to check the balance in your account. To use the mobile banking service, you are required to download the bank's mobile banking app.

Once you have successfully logged in to your account, select 'Enquiry services' from the Main Menu. Under the 'Enquiry Services', select 'Balance Enquiry', select the bank account for which you want to check the balance and enter the MPIN. Press 'Menu' button and select 'Confirm'.

  • Via missed call service
SBI customers can also check the savings account balance using the bank's missed call service. Using this facility one can check one's account balance, get a mini statement, home loan interest certificate and other services.

To access this service, you are required to register for it, as per the bank's website.

Once you have registered for this service, you are required to send a missed call or send an SMS 'BAL' to 09223766666.

Charges for checking the balance
SBI does not charge its customers for checking their account balance using any of the above-mentioned facilities. However, in case of the ATM service, there is a limit on the number free non-financial transactions in a month.

The number of such free transactions depends on the average monthly balance maintained by you. If the number of such transactions exceeds the free limit, then you will be charged either at Rs 8 (for other bank ATM) or Rs 5 (for SBI own ATM) plus GST at 18 per cent, as per the charges mentioned on the banks website.
