Guwahati: Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that whether he will contest the 2021 assembly polls or not is a decision which will be taken by his family and party.

Sarma who is BJP's strategist in Northeast India joined BJP in 2015 just a year ahead of Assam election and scripted BJP’s win in Assam.

A debate has started in Assam as who will be the next chief minister, Minister of state for health Pijush Hazarika and close aide of Himanta recently said that Himanta has all the capabilities to become chief minister. “Himanta has been a successful minister for almost two decades.”

Himanta and State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass however maintained that 3.30 Crore people of Assam have the capacity to become Assam chief minister.

Himanta on Monday added, “However with god blessing and some luck one can be chief minister.”

Couple of BJP leaders had opined that the decision of the chief minister is something which is taken by the BJP’s central leadership in consultation with the elected MLAs.

Assam is expected to go to assembly polls early next year. Congress is proposing a grand alliance with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and other parties opposed to Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Sarma attacked former chief minister, Tarun Gogoi and said that at the age of 90 Gogoi instead of taking the name of Rama and Krishna is chanting the name of Badruddin Ajmal. Ajmal is chief of AIUDF and Lok Sabha MP.

Sarma said that as per Hindu philosophy a person of 90 years must renounce everything worldly. “Instead of talking the name Ram and Krishna, Gogoi is only chanting Ajmal’s name and doing Ajmal Bhajan (recital).”
