Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police D Gautam Sawang says online frauds have risen although there has been a sharp drop in overall crime rate during the lockdown. Excerpts from an interview with Shantanu Nandan Sharma:

How steep has been the fall in crime rate during the lockdown?

During the lockdown, there has been a 50-60% drop in the state’s overall crime rate. We have seen a drastic fall in all types of crimes, including economic ones and property disputes.

Have you noticed any new trend of manipulation by fraudsters during this period?

Cybercrimes, including online frauds such as procuring OTPs and ATM passcodes, have increased by 14% in Andhra Pradesh. But the growth is partly due to our stepped-up enforcement too.

We have booked a number of cases for misusing social media handles and spreading fake news.

Have you noticed a spike in domestic violence and liquor smuggling?
During this period, till April 27, we received 359 distress calls from women and 1,501 calls on family disputes. We already have an app called Disha, which has seen over 2.5 lakh downloads.

If a woman shakes her mobile phone three times, we get an alert. It also records 10 seconds of video and audio, and the feed comes straight to the control room. All calls won’t lead to FIRs, though. Some will be resolved at the counselling stage. In the case of liquor, we have detected a large number of illegal brewing and cases of home breweries.
