NRC final draft on July 30, Aasu hopes it will be 'error-free'

GUWAHATI: With Supreme Court on Monday extending the date for publication of final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) to July 30, All Assam Students Union (Aasu) is hopeful the process would be error-free.

A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R F Nariman extended the date after considering the report of state NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela in which he explained how floods in several districts of the state hampered work on the NRC. Earlier the court had set June 30 as the date of publication of the final draft.

The NRC is updated as per the provisions of Assam accord of 1985. Aasu is a signatory of the Assam Accord.

AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said the organisation is hopeful that on July 30 the final draft of NRC will be published.

The partial draft of NRC was published on December 31, 2017. Names of around 1.90 crore people appeared in the first draft.
