The total number of coronavirus infections in India rose to 1,51,767 in the past 24 hours, according to Union Health ministry's latest update.

Fatalities were at 4,337 as of 8 am this morning. The number of the cured/discharged stands at 64,426 as of now, the website of Health ministry showed.

Maharashtra, the hardest-hit state, has reported 54,758 cases and 1,792 deaths so far.

Data shows that after a surge in cases, Mumbai was among world’s four cities — the other three being Moscow, Sao Paulo and New York — with the highest number of cases in the past five days.

Meanwhile, the govt has claimed that successive lockdowns since March have caused a drastic improvement in the country's Covid-19 recovery rate and also brought down the mortality rate.

In a presentation, the Health ministry said yesterday that the recovery rate "went up to 41.61% on May 26, in the fourth stage of the lockdown, from 7.1% on March 25, when the lockdown started, and 11.42% on April 15 when the second lockdown was imposed." The fatality rate had "gone down to 2.87% now from 3.3% on April 15," it added.
