Vikas Dubey was in Faridabad and had tried to take a room in a hotel, whose CCTV footage went viral, a senior official said.

Kanpur ambush: Vikas Dubey spotted in Faridabad; gangster's 4 aides arrested, 1 killed
NEW DELHI | LUCKNOW: Fugitive gangster Vikas Dubey was spotted in Faridabad, a township in the national capital region, but managed to escape from the dragnet of the Haryana Police on Tuesday. The Uttar Pradesh Police, which had deployed nearly 100 teams to track him down, had suspected that he may have fled to Nepal or the Chambal.

A Faridabad police statement said Dubey was hiding in the house of his relative in the district and escaped a few hours before the raid on Tuesday night. Before reaching Faridabad, Dubey hid for two days in the house of his friend in Shivli in Kanpur, 75 km from his village, from where he escaped on the night of July 2, police said.

The UP STF reached Delhi-NCR after confirming that a man spotted in a CCTV outside a Faridabad hotel on Tuesday was Dubey. A hunt is on amid speculation that he may try to surrender in a court in Delhi or NCR.

He wore a mask and was seen limping, before he hired an auto-rickshaw. The reward on him was hiked to ?5 lakh on Wednesday. Three of his accomplices were arrested from the Faridabad house on Tuesday evening by the Haryana Police after a brief encounter, leading to the recovery of two of the pistols stolen by Dubey’s gang from the UP Police in Bikru village on July 2 night.

It is believed that the interrogation of the three men led to the STF gunning down Dubey’s right-hand man Amar in Hamirpur on Wednesday morning. UP additional DG (law & order) Prashant Kumar said a looted AK-47 and an Insas rifle were still missing.

A senior UP Police official handling ‘Operation Vikas Dubey’ told ET that the man was a hardened criminal, who did not use a personal vehicle or mobile phone, making it hard to track him down. “We have arrested or neutralised nearly 10 of his key accomplices and Dubey will be tracked down very soon,” the official said.

Former Chaubeypur police station SHO Vinay Tiwari and sub-inspector KK Sharma have now been arrested for their alleged links with Dubey. It is believed that they tipped off Dubey about the police raid on July 2 night, and Tiwari had instigated Dubey against DSP Devendra Mishra, who was killed brutally that night.
