Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi on arrest of two girls for participating in anti-CAA protests

They were arrested in connection with their alleged role in the anti- CAA sit-in protest at Jaffrabad in North East Delhi in February early this year.

Former Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi sad that arrest of two girls for participating in anti Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) agitation by Delhi police is nothing but political vendetta and attempt to suppress their fundamental right.

In a letter to Union Home minister, Amit Shah, Gogoi stated, “I would like to bring to your kind notice about arrest of two girls students, one is Devangana Kalita and another is Natasha Narwal of Jawaharlal Nehru University of Delhi on 24 th May 2020, by Delhi Police. One of the students Devangana who is doing M Phil is from my state of Assam. Other student Narwal is doing Ph D at JNU. The arrest of two girls students by Delhi police is most condemn-able”.

They were arrested in connection with their alleged role in the anti- CAA sit-in protest at Jaffrabad in North East Delhi in February early this year.

Gogoi added, “Two students are from most prestigious educational institute of the country Jawaharla Nehru University were arrested from their home in connection with Jafrabad anti-CAA sit-in protest in February 2020. They didn’t commit any offence. It is fact that they took part in a peaceful agitation in Delhi in February 2020 against CAA. They were not indulging in any violence and didn’t incite people to show violent behaviour”.

Gogoi said, “Indian Constitution has given right to everybody to express or to agitate against the decision of the Government and both of them did nothing except exercising their fundamental right. You know yourself that great agitations are going on all over the country against CAA and CAA violets the principle of Indian Constitution and also go against the Assam Accord. We have no doubt this is nothing but political vendetta and attempt to suppress their fundamental right.I therefore request you to kindly direct Delhi police to release both the students immediately.”
