Covid-19 wreaks havoc on Indian politicians

Politicians have been on the receiving end in the pandemic. On Tuesday, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat Abhay Bhardwaj succumbed to the coronavirus infection. Bhardwaj had become an MP only in June this year.

NEW DELHI: A former President, four past chief ministers, one union and seven state ministers, and several lawmakers have succumbed to Covid-19 in the past few months.

Politicians have been on the receiving end in the pandemic. On Tuesday, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat Abhay Bhardwaj succumbed to the coronavirus infection. Bhardwaj had become an MP only in June this year.

He was tested positive after attending a roadshow of Gujarat BJP president CR Patil in August. He was later taken to a hospital in Chennai, where he breathed his last.


Telangana Rashtra Samithi MLA Nomula Narasimhaiah too died on Tuesday of post-Covid-19 complications.

Including these two leaders, two MLAs and two Rajya Sabha MPs passed away due to Covid-19 between November 25 and December 1. On November 25, senior Congress leader and MP Ahmed Patel lost his life. Rajasthan BJP MLA Kiran Maheshwari died on November 30.

The country has lost half a dozen sitting MPs including a union minister, 20 MLAs including seven state ministers and two legislative council members due to the coronavirus infection. Former President Pranab Mukherjee, former lieutenant governor of Puducherry Chandrawati and four former CMs — Shivajirao Patil of Maharashtra, Keshubhai Patel of Gujarat, Satish Prasad Singh of Bihar and Tarun Gogoi of Assam — have lost their lives due to Covid-19 or post-infection complications.

DMK MLA Anbazhagan was the first MLA in the country to lose his life due to Covid-19, on June 10, which incidentally was his birthday, too.

Among the six MPs, three each were from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. In the Lok Sabha, Belgaum MP and union minister Suresh Angadi succumbed to Covid-19 in Delhi in September. The others were Congress MP from Kanyakumari H Vasantha Kumar and YSR Congress MP from Tirupati Balli Durga Prasad Rao.

In the Rajya Sabha, apart from Bhardwaj and Patel, both from Gujarat, BJP’s newly elected MP from Karnataka, Ashok Gasti, also succumbed to Covid-19, in September. Four of these MPs were first-time parliamentarians.

Out of the 20 MLAs who died, four were from West Bengal and all of them belonged to the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress. They were Tamonash Ghosh, Samaresh Das, Gurupada Mete and deputy speaker Sukumar Hansda.

In Bihar, ministers Kapil Deo Kamat and Vinod Kumar Singh lost their lives due to Covid-19, while in UP, Chetan Chauhan and Kamla Rani Varun died following Covid-related complications. Jharkhand (Haji Hussain Ansari), Nagaland (CM Chang) and Tamil Nadu (R Doraikkannu) lost one minister each due to Covid-19. A BJP MLC, Sunil Kumar Singh, in Bihar and a Samajwadi Party MLC SRS Yadav in UP also succumbed to the infection.

More than 50 former MPs and MLAs put together have lost their lives due to the infection. They include former union minister and Bihar MP Raghuvansh Prasad Singh P Mangyal from Ladakh and Rasheed Masood of UP.

In Gujarat, former BJP MP Mahesh Kanodia and his brother and former BJP MLA Naresh Kanodia died due to Covid-19 within a gap of a few days.
