India’s Covid-19 pandemic trajectory is mirroring what the country had witnessed in the early days of the pandemic during April with states such as Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh featuring among the top six states in the active case count.

These states had seen a slowdown in the number of new infections since June.

However, latest figures show there is a new wave of infections in these states.

Rajasthan, for example, had accounted for less than 1% of all active cases in the country since June but its share has now climbed up to 6.43% – comparable to its April share of 6.78%. Similarly, Uttar Pradesh now contributes to 5.5% of the active cases.

Even though there is plateau in active cases, some states that had managed to contain the virus in the last four months are witnessing new spikes.

“Amid Covid pandemic, with gradual opening of economic activities, markets are witnessing high footfalls. Such large gatherings, without observance of Covid-19 appropriate behaviour have the potential to spread the coronavirus disease,” the health ministry said.

The ministry has specifically advised market associations to protect vulnerable groups like people above 65 years of age, persons with comorbidities, pregnant women, and children below the age of 10 years who are advised to stay at home, except for essential and health purposes.

India’s present active caseload of 446,952 comprises just 4.74% of the total positive cases, the ministry said in its statement. Divya Rajagopal reports.
