Complete lockdown in Bengaluru from 14-22 July as Covid-19 cases rise
Bengaluru: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa announced a week-long lockdown in Bengaluru with effect from July 14. The decision was taken following a surge in Covid-19 cases in Karnataka and particularly in Bengaluru.

The lockdown will be in force in Bengaluru urban and Bengaluru rural districts from 8 pm on July 14 to 5 am on July 22, the chief minister’s office said. The government is expected to issue an official notification on Sunday.

Asking people not to panic over the lockdown, the CM said that there will not be any disruption in essential services such as hospitals, groceries, milk and vegetables and medical stores. “We have taken the lockdown decision to contain the spread of Covid-19, as per the experts advice,” the CM said in a press release, while appealing people to strictly follow social distancing and mask wearing norms.

Previously, the Karnataka government had announced complete lockdown across the state on five Sundays from July 5 to August 2.

The Yediyurappa government has been grappling to manage the sudden surge in Covid cases in the last two weeks. Bengaluru had just 581 Covid-19 positive cases on June 11. A month later, the number of cases in Bengaluru is 16,862 and death toll is 229. Karnataka has reported a total of 36,216 cases of which 20,883 are active cases.

The state government has maintained that opening inter-state borders following unlock 1.0 has resulted in the spread of infection.
