Mukesh Ambani continues to rule Hurun India Rich List for 9th consecutive year; Smita V Crishna richest woman

The Hinduja Brothers occupied the second spot on the list.

Mukesh Ambani saw his wealth surge by 73% in the last 12 months. Godrej's Smita V Crishna, the richest woman on the list, ranks at the 28th spot overall.

2020 has been a challenging year for not just the Indian but the global economy. The coronavirus-induced lockdowns brought business activities to a screeching halt, taking away jobs from many.

However, even in the pandemic India's rich on the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich list saw their wealth grow twice as fast as the net market capitalisation growth of all the companies listed in the BSE.

Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani topped the list for the ninth consecutive year, with a total wealth of Rs 6.58 lakh crore. According to the report, Ambani has gained Rs 90 cr per hour since the March lockdown.


The 63-year-old, who sealed a partnership with Facebook this year, saw his wealth surge by 73 per cent in the last 12 months, propelling him to become the richest person in Asia and fourth richest in the world.

London-based Hinduja brothers with a joint wealth of Rs 1.43 lakh crore took the second spot and were followed by HCL Founder Shiv Nadar at Number 3 with a wealth of Rs 1.41 lakh crore .

Gautam Adani and family ranked at the fourth spot and Azim Premji came in at number five.

Godrej's Smita V Crishna, with a wealth of Rs 32,400 crore, is the richest woman on the list, and ranks at the 28th spot overall. The 69-year-old, is not new to rich lists, sits on the board of Godrej Industries and owns a one-fifth stake in the family assets.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw is close with a wealth of Rs 31,600 crore. The 67-year-old Biocon boss is the richest self-made woman and is within arm’s reach of becoming the richest woman in the country.

Brothers Nikhil and Nithin Kamath, who co-founded the online trading platform Zerodha, saw their combined wealth climb 150 per cent. With a wealth of Rs 16,900 crore, Nithin Kamath stormed into Top 100, and 34-year-old Nikhil registered a wealth of Rs 7,100 crore.

162 new faces from 31 industries also made their debut on the 2020 list. “More than 70% of the new entrants are self-made – this depicts the rising first-generation entrepreneurship in India,” Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India, said.

The fact that the list features entrepreneurs from 111 cities evidence the length and breadth of India’s wealth creation story”, Junaid added.

However, the maximum number of names on the list were from India's big cities. Being home to 217 individuals that comprise 26 per cent of the list, Mumbai is the residential capital of India's wealthy, followed by New Delhi and Bengaluru. 2020 saw Mumbai register an increase of 41 individuals on the rich list, while New Delhi lost 5.
